Road Warriors – Weekend Part II
So weekends are fun. Poor, obvious statement, but they are. When I stop rubbing the globs of pollen out of my eyes for five seconds I can appreciate Saturday and Sunday in all their Not Having To Take The Bus Anywhere Glory. Mostly because this is the most amount of time I get to spend with Jonah, also because I get to drive. With Jonah.
This is something I really didn’t get to do much as a stay-at-home-dad, and still don’t now as a working dad, but it makes every weekend seem like an adventure. With gas at 3.1_ a gallon this could come to a screeching halt by the end of the month, but until then, Jonah and I will hit the road for anything.
In a previous life, or that time before I created another human being (see backstory), I was trained as an expert car-rider by my parents, who refused to fly us on our annual trips to Florida and Wisconsin. From Maine. This stamina only grew during my senior year in high school when my then-girlfriend decided to go to college in Montreal, meaning that I spent many weekends driving there and back. Again, from Maine.
College was fun, just a cool eight hour drive from home, made several times a year. And there was that trip across the country and back, not to mention my time wasted sitting in traffic in LA (only to get somewhere and watch my soul rot). And finally there were those nomadic months after college spent traveling.
But that was then. I’ve left the state once this calendar year. So I’m always excited to strap J into his car seat and go somewhere. Anywhere. Yesterday it was the farmer’s market, and the Sciencenter. Today it was a state park. For the waffles. What? Jonah, waffles? Oh, waterfalls. W-a-t-e-r-f-a-l-l-s. Like this one?
It has been dry around here so the gorge and riverbed were pretty tame, but that meant we got to walk upstream and get soaked and run around and scream and have fun.
And Jonah saw a big waffle.
Then he rode home naked.
