Hi, a new site/business is gestating and will be here soon. My old one page, horizontal scroller site is available on Github. I also recently created three fonts: Lickety Split, Guilder, and Knewave. Contact me at or call +1 (607) 216-8779.

The Sursly Font – Blackout – Now Downloadable

May 28, 2009

**** BIG UPDATE: I released a new version of Blackout that destroys all previous versions! *****

Blackout: I love it, but I’m setting it free…

Sursly Blackout Font

As much as I fear seeing this font pop up in unexpected places, I’m equally excited about that same concept. For the time-being, this font (and corresponding files) will remain on sursly.com (and only there). As I develop Blackout further I will update this post and link to the latest version (wherever it may be), but for the time being: get it while it’s hottt

zip-iconGET BLACKOUT

by downloading this ZIP file and contents you agree to not re-distribute or modify the contents in any way. Please read the .txt file for more information

Since you can use this for personal and/or commercial purposes I’d love to see what you do with it. Either post a comment below or send me an email. Don’t send attachments, just link-up to the work.

A little outer glow never hurt nobody

I’m also including the PSD file that was used to make these example files (which was made in CS2). I make no guarantees that this won’t blow up your computer, but it hasn’t happened to me. So I have to say: use at your own risk.

I wonder how can you create the paper texture in psd file?

  12. Tyler says:

Paper texture: I fold/crumple/whatever paper, scan it in and make a brush out of it in Photoshop. Pretty simple (and there are many out there): http://tinyurl.com/nx6z6l

  29. denise says:

    Thanks! the font is wonderful!

  30. Olav Hobberstad says:

For some reason, only the midnight font will show up.
When I install the 2am font it won’t show up in neither the Fonts folder nor any of the programs I use, but if I try to install it again it will tell me that the font is already installed and ask me to overwrite. It’s like this on both my laptop and desktop computer.

  31. Giem says:

Love, love, love the font! Thanks.

Any advise on them Windows problems yet? Would be great if they could be fixed….

  32. I have the same problem, can’t use the midnight version :(
    only 2am !!
how can I work it out ?

  33. Nicole says:

Great design. I like designing with just texts and make them stand up. Not everyone can do it.

  34. elizabeth says:

this font is all kinds of aweome BUT… i would also love a fix to the windows/2AM problem. currently i can’t use midnight and it’s driving me nuts! thanks for your great work though :D

  35. Logi says:

I think its with the naming of the font. when i try to install them one by one it overwrites the first one.

  36. Fabulous Rice says:

    It doesn’t work :(

  40. Alsey says:

I’ll use this font as my banner font on my blog! Thank you so much :>

  41. ryan walters says:

Hey man, I stumbled across your work when my wife was plunking around the innerwebs, trying to find me some work in Ithaca so we can move there. Bet you’ve never had an intro line like that before! Anyway, my in-laws recently moved out there, we recently had our first child (coolest thing I’ve ever done, by far!), and they miss him. She found an ad for a designer at Singlebrook, which led me to you. We seem to have a lot in common, and I dig your work. Unfortunately, I’m a photographer rather than a web designer, so I’ll have to keep looking for work in Ithaca, but if we do get out there, I’d love to meet up and have a brew, coffee, chai tea, lemonade…anything tasty and refreshing, really.

    Cheers,

    Ryan

    PS-Loving Blackout! Very nice work!!

  42. Deanna says:

Same trouble with windows here. I can only use the 2 AM version of Blackout. Anxious for a fix!

My most recent typeface! It originated as crayon on index cards and is beautifully sloppy.

An elegant condensed typeface in several styles (and featured as headings in this current site design).

there are so many people out there making incredible things. I don't contribute as often as I'd like because I'm busy packing lunches for a six year old.

A Little Background

I specialize in web, logo and font design (& brand development) in Ithaca, New York. I have freelanced since 2003, when I received a BFA in Film, Photography, and Visual Arts. I spent over one year as a designer for Sharktooth Creative (lots of Flash and print design), then nearly three years with the wonderful AWP, a year and a half as a designer at Ithaca College, and a year with Singlebrook. I take photos of interesting people and places.

I've raised a healthy son. We have fun. I make music. I run races. I take little vacations. I survived a month long trip to India. And I recently began eating meat again for the first time in 6 years.
