Sursly Inc. – Fonts, Photos, & Fine Digital Goods

Hi, a new site/business is gestating and will be here soon. My old one page, horizontal scroller site is available on Github. I also recently created three fonts: Lickety Split, Guilder, and Knewave. Contact me at or call +1 (607) 216-8779.

Listen To: Gavin Castleton

January 7, 2009

OK ppl, really: http://www.gavincastleton.com

I don’t think he’ll mind that I’m borrowing this sweet banner (I’ll give it back). The point is: you’ll love what you’ll hear.

I’m pretty sure I had his Hypoteneuse album on repeat for the entire month I was in India, which either kept me sane or made me miss New England like crazy, but I’ve been hooked since the Gruvis Malt days. I can’t believe I took this video 6 years ago (wow):

A Heart Transplant You Could Afford

So he is/was the keyboardist for that band (sorry for the Worst Audio & Video Ever), who consistently provided the best live shows I’ve ever attended. But this is now, solo (not one of his songs, but it has GavCaz written all over it):

Big things coming, whether he likes it or not. His new album sounds ridiculously unique, and progressive even for him. Check out the other videos he has on that YouTube page.

If you want to listen to MY favorite work of his, check out A Bullet, A Lever, A Key, which chronicles his prospective life (in reverse) if he were to give up music NOW. It starts (or ends) with his suicide in a hotel room (2054) and moves back to 2007, when he ditches music for a more “normal” live. The track titles are years (as mentioned above) and narrative…and beautiful. 2054 is one of my favorite songs ever written. Enjoy.

Photos ∞

If I'm not parenting or working, I'm probably taking pictures of people. Some of my non-people photography is available to license on Getty Images while many others are available with a Creative Commons license on Flickr.

Vimeos ∞

I also have a YouTube account you can check out.

Blackout ∞

When I launched the previous version of sursly.com I designed it based on this font that I created.

Lickety Split ∞

My most recent typeface! It originated as crayon on index cards and is beautifully sloppy.

Ostrich Sans ∞

An open source font family that I created and happily share over at The League of Moveable Type.

Guilder ∞

An elegant condensed typeface in several styles (and featured as headings in this current site design).

Dribbble ∞

there are so many people out there making incredible things. I don't contribute as often as I'd like because I'm busy packing lunches for a six year old.

A Little Background

I specialize in web, logo and font design (& brand development) in Ithaca, New York. I have freelanced since 2003, when I received a BFA in Film, Photography, and Visual Arts. I spent over one year as a designer for Sharktooth Creative (lots of Flash and print design), then nearly three years with the wonderful AWP, a year and a half as a designer at Ithaca College, and a year with Singlebrook. I take photos of interesting people and places.

I've raised a healthy son. We have fun. I make music. I run races. I take little vacations. I survived a month long trip to India. And I recently began eating meat again for the first time in 6 years.
