Sursly Inc. – Fonts, Photos, & Fine Digital Goods

Hi, a new site/business is gestating and will be here soon. My old one page, horizontal scroller site is available on Github. I also recently created three fonts: Lickety Split, Guilder, and Knewave. Contact me at or call +1 (607) 216-8779.

Oh Holy God

July 29, 2008

Clearly I can’t keep up in the blog world. Lately I’ve been infatuated with Twitter, since I’d rather spend 10 seconds updating a silly little one-liner rather than taking the time to write a full post. So I’m going to send this blog into the archives soon as I transition Sursly to a one-page site.

Which is what my site used to be. Or something similar.

The problem is that I use this place as an outlet for design that doesn’t fit in at work. The look for this blog/site inspired and influenced the AWP re-design (and brand, in some sense). And WordPress (which powers this site, and the blog at work) is powerful and coherent enough (for a designer) that I feel compelled to challenge myself and change things in spurts.

But enough about techy stuff. I’ve also realized that I haven’t worked at all (nor do I plan to) on getting “readers”. I assume that my friends, family, enemies, whoever, will find this site somehow. So my audience isn’t to 100s of 1000s (see: dooce) or event a targeted group (see: web designer wall). And those people who know me – or get to know me by checking out sursly – also know that I’m a bit impulsive with this and more concerned with making something I like than something you like.

So I’m not sure what the future holds. I’ve recently been inspired by onepagelove which reminds me that there are too many sites with too many pages out there. We’ll see what happens.

I did return from vacation to find the postcards I designed for a client sitting on my desk. They look pretty sweet, check it out the rest on the work flickr account.

Photos ∞

If I'm not parenting or working, I'm probably taking pictures of people. Some of my non-people photography is available to license on Getty Images while many others are available with a Creative Commons license on Flickr.

Vimeos ∞

I also have a YouTube account you can check out.

Blackout ∞

When I launched the previous version of sursly.com I designed it based on this font that I created.

Lickety Split ∞

My most recent typeface! It originated as crayon on index cards and is beautifully sloppy.

Ostrich Sans ∞

An open source font family that I created and happily share over at The League of Moveable Type.

Guilder ∞

An elegant condensed typeface in several styles (and featured as headings in this current site design).

Dribbble ∞

there are so many people out there making incredible things. I don't contribute as often as I'd like because I'm busy packing lunches for a six year old.

A Little Background

I specialize in web, logo and font design (& brand development) in Ithaca, New York. I have freelanced since 2003, when I received a BFA in Film, Photography, and Visual Arts. I spent over one year as a designer for Sharktooth Creative (lots of Flash and print design), then nearly three years with the wonderful AWP, a year and a half as a designer at Ithaca College, and a year with Singlebrook. I take photos of interesting people and places.

I've raised a healthy son. We have fun. I make music. I run races. I take little vacations. I survived a month long trip to India. And I recently began eating meat again for the first time in 6 years.
